Standards for Medical Education are produced by a country’s Medical Education Accreditation Authority and form the backbone of the Accreditation process. Standards contain Elements and a medical school is assessed by its compliance with Standards and performance in the Elements.

Countries often formulate their own Standards, but rather than “reinventing the wheel” they regularly adopt (then adapt) existing Standards of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), or the US Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). In the latter case, the Standards are contained in the document, Functions and Structure of a Medical School – which is updated annually. WFME Standards are not updated annually.

Some agencies use the Standards and Outcomes of the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) or the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), based in Ireland. ACCM Standards correspond closely to those of LCME as most of their clients require NCFMEA recognition.

WFME or GMC Standards are probably more suitable for countries that are not pursuing NCFMEA recognition.
